ABSTRACT
The paper is an attempt to find the answer for the question: is the demand for 3D data a chance to implement in GIS the old technique – stereo-orthoimage? At first the history of stereoorthophoto was presented. Then the reasons of decline of interest in this technique were examined. In the author opinion the main cause was usage of this technique in the time of analogue photogrammetry. The author concluded, that digital image processing gives an opportunity to go back to the old technique. Then the strategy for popularization stereo orthophoto was given. The main point of this strategy would be implementing stereo orthoimage method into GIS tools, preferably open source. In conclusion the author states that there is synergy between GIS and stereo-orthophoto: 3D GIS needs stereo and GIS can help in modern usage of stereo-orthoimage.
